Germany is expected to significantly expand its armored capabilities with the purchase of 75 new Leopard 2A8 tanks, the most advanced version of the model. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed that the government is preparing an official proposal to enable the acquisition in 2025.
The Leopard 2A8 is already considered the leading candidate to gradually replace older versions of the tank currently in service with the Bundeswehr.
The order reinforces a growing movement among European countries such as Lithuania, Sweden, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Croatia, which also plan to integrate the Leopard 2A8 into their arsenals.
Priced at around US$ 23 million per unit, the model stands out for offering next-generation multilayer armor, enhanced mine protection, integration of the Trophy active protection system, and advanced sensors that provide full situational awareness around the vehicle.
Manufacturer KNDS states that Spain and the Baltic States may be the next customers, supporting the strategy of standardizing the use of the Leopard 2A8 in Europe to reduce costs and improve military interoperability.
